Art Gallery, King Street, Newtown
Site 1
The gallery is designed to cater specifically to three artists and will show new art as can be replaced by the sale of a previous piece. The artists are Alexandre Orion, Chuck Close and will include a large scale sculpture of the owner’s choice, incorporated into the round garden. Alexandre Orion is an urban artist, using the street and his surroundings as his canvas. His art is quite interactive often incorporating real figures into his street art. He is also quite well known for his form of street art known as ‘Reverse Graffiti’ by which Alexandre will create an image by removing dirt, more often than not recorded to make a feature movie of the work in progress. The flow of the gallery directs all through a small dark video room in which one of these films may be playing.
The other artist, whose work will be the main attraction, will be Chuck Close. Chuck Close is a well known photo realist painter. His early paintings often confused for photos and many people refusing to believe they are paintings until introduced face to face. In later life he suffered from a catastrophic spinal artery collapse which left him almost completely paralysed. He has since however returned to painting to produce enormous portraits (still) but with little control he constructs them of amorphous patterns of paint that produce an even more amazing end product.
